happy memorial day

Happy Memorial Day everyone. Be safe.

Thanks to anyone who fought. We always say "for our freedom", but that's not always the case. Sometimes it's for our freedom, sometimes it's because we think we need to run the world, sometimes it's for oil... but our service people fight and rescue and sacrifice regardless. So thanks, for that.

*The photo is something I snapped yesterday. Something about the flag and the bike on the open road seemed appropriate for this weekend

asian fest photos

Even with a cracked LCD display on my camera, I managed to take almost 100 photos over the past couple of days at the Asian Festival. I also got sunburned. One day I will remember to put on sunblock before I go spend hours and hours in the hot sun.

Here are my favorite photos from the asian festival: Clicky clicky

shiny!

Silver Turtle Boyfriend and I finally got around to getting eye exams again. Which means shiny new glasses all around!

These are my slightly funky new glasses.:

These are my old glasses.

My prescription hardly changed at all, so I can wear the old ones, too. In case green & orange don't match my outfit. Or I'm just in the mood for plain old black. If I had Randy Jackson's cash I'd own about 50 pairs of glasses in all kinds of colors and styles, too.

Silver Turtle Boyfriend lost his old glasses. They were gold rectanglur wire frame things. By Armani. This time around he got silver & black rectangular wire frame things. By Prada. That boy has expensive taste. I couldn't find his glasses online, but they're something like this - only more rectangular.

Yay for shiny new stuff.

happy birthday, bro

Today my brother would have turned 38. Hope he's sending down good karma to all of us.

Happy birthday, Jeff.

live music

Went out to see a friend play last night - somehow I've managed to go over a month without seeing any local bands. I had a great time and met a few cool people.

My friend is good, so you might want to check her out: Megan Palmer

I can't wait to get playing out again myself, although I don't know when I'll find the time. Right now I'm finishing up a magazine layout, making time to take photos*, and possibly cowriting/codirecting/coeverything-ing a little film with a friend.

Feeling creative is great, but it does make it hard to prioritize.

*I take photos for fun and because I enjoy it. But I keep having all kinds of people tell me I should do some freelance. I decided to start with a little cafepress store featuring some of my regional photography. I have some tweaking to do, but that's everything in life all the time anyways.

the game

Silver Turtle Boyfriend and I live in the University District. This translates to us living close to students at a big university to our west and south, and not too far from the ghetto further south and east, and close to a little sort-of hippy community to our north. We've lived in this general area for a few years, because we've got an awesome apartment, an okay neighborhood, and we're close to downtown and our jobs.

There are students about year-round, walking to and from class, or to and from their girlfriend's house, or whatever. Every spring it seems that overnight the number of students out at once quadruples because it's suddenly nice enough outside to hang out there. Pretty typical college kid stuff; hanging out on your porch or roof, beers in a little wading pool, not doing your homework, enjoying life.

Then, a couple years ago, something was added to the mix. All of the sudden everyone was playing a game while they hang out. It's so prevalent that both Silver Turtle Boyfriend and I walk or drive past and have to comment on how much everyone seems to love this new game. It's been a couple years and the game is still here - they play it all of the time. And since it's spring again, the games have come out.

The game, of course, is CORNHOLE. Or, as we called it when I was a kid, bean bag toss. It's sort of similar to darts, from what I can tell, in that you need to toss with one hand, and have a beer or similar drink in the other hand - presumably for balance. I didn't really like bean bag toss much when I was a kid. My favorite things were floor hockey or basketball. But maybe the key to enjoying a good game of cornhole is the beer that goes with it.
